Love to collect fire helmets

Since I was a kid I’ve always been fascinated by firemen, their helmets, and how they put out the fire. I’ve seen movies like Spiderman, The Incredibles, and the Adam Sandler movie I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry, and noticed all these movies have burning buildings, thus, the presence of firemen. Although mom and dad bought me those fire trucks of different models, shapes, and sizes, especially if I’m in my best behavior, I would always ask, “Where’s my helmet?”.

They discouraged me from being a fireman because of the occupational hazards it posed, and to think I’ve always wanted to wear one of those fire helmets and hold the heavy hose. I always wore a fire helmet even when I’m at home not just because I’m a wannabe, but because I felt comfortable with it and my head is where a fire helmet belongs. Wearing it has become my trademark and fashion statement; I’ve always dressed as a fireman on Halloween parties, with different helmets of course.

I’m now 35 years old, happily married with two beautiful children and to this day, I have not stopped collecting fire helmets. Leather, plastic, antique, custom-painted; you name it I probably got it. The best part is I got some of the best finds on eBay. With reasonable prices, there’s a wide variety to choose from. Since buying them on eBay I’ve been sporting quite a collection, I’m gonna have to put them all in a separate room.

Helmet saved the life of firefighter

The day the fireman put his helmet on my head was the day I viewed fire helmets in a different light.

We had show and tell at school when I was in first grade and I remember there was a female police officer, a lawyer, a doctor, and a firefighter. They introduced themselves and gave us a background of what they do, and shared some of their experiences while on the job. Most of my classmates were awed by the cop and her commanding presence, we were bored by the lawyer, the doctor talked about blood – lots of it, but the firefighter caught my attention when he talked about how the helmet saved his life.

I vividly recall his name. He was Matt. He told his experience about retrieving bodies from a collapsed building caused by an earthquake. It was a “decrepit” building he said, and at that time I didn’t know the meaning of the word, but I had a guess he meant old and hopeless. When he and other firefighters went inside all that rubble, a part of the ceiling fell on his head and he lost consciousness. He suffered headaches afterward but gradually recovered.

He emphasized the importance of wearing a helmet and showed us the cracked helmet that made him be with us that day; he could’ve died without it. That’s when I asked if I could wear his helmet, something simple yet valuable to him. At that point I didn’t want to be a fireman but I sure loved the helmet. I saw them as effortless life-savers that a lot of people take for granted.

Matt didn’t give me his helmet but I asked my mom to buy me one. That’s when I started collecting fire helmets, went through different stores, some of them specialty, some just toy stores and they’re the ones I put on display. That was back then. Now, I just go online and check out what eBay has to offer. Because of eBay, searching for fire helmets made my helmet collection faster, easier, and more convenient. No more going to the store and falling in line, with eBay everything is done from selection, payment, and after a few days my helmet would arrive at my doorstep.
